CPTV Receives the Most Emmy Nominations of any Connecticut Television Station

HARTFORD , Conn. – The New England Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced on April 10 that CPTV has received 18 Emmy nominations, the most for any Connecticut television station. The nominations came in 12 different categories, ranging from Public/Current Affairs to Children’s Program. The 30th Boston/New England Emmy Awards Ceremony will be presented at the Boston Marriott Copley Place on Saturday, May 12, 2007.

James A. Whitsett Jr., CPTV’s senior vice president for local programming, said, “I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to the talented group of producers, editors and production people for creating such excellent programming for Connecticut Public Broadcasting. By telling Connecticut’s stories, you are providing an educational and entertaining service for our viewers.”

Since 1989, CPTV has won 60 Emmy awards and received 312 nominations.

CPTV and WNPR Are Honored for Programming and Public Service

NATAS Silver Circle

Larry Rifkin, CPTV’s senior programming executive, was inducted into the Silver Circle of The Boston/New England Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS.) The 2006 Silver Circle Induction Ceremony was held in Boston, Massachusetts, on Nov. 15, 2006.

The NATAS Silver Circle honors veteran television professionals who have made significant contributions to the Academy, to their communities and to people training for careers in television. Silver Circle candidates must have a minimum of 25 years of service in a technical, performing, creative or administrative role in television or in an associated activity directly related to television. The Boston/ New England Chapter of NATAS has honored 66 television professionals over the last 13 years.

The CPTV Original documentary, Teens Behind the Wheel, won a regional Emmy award at the 29th Boston/New England Emmy Awards Ceremony on Saturday, June 3, 2006.

The Emmy Awards Ceremeny was held at the Boston Convention Center. Jennifer Boyd, producer/director/writer; Jay Whitsett, executive producer and vice president of programming for CPTV; Kevin Jeffko, CPTV editor; and Jim Chapdelaine, composer, received Emmys for the documentary in the Educational or School category.

In April, CPTV received six Emmy nominations – including the one for Teens Behind the Wheel – from the Boston/New England Chapter of the National Television Academy.

  • In the Emmy category of Educational or School Program, Jennifer Boyd, producer/director/writer;
    Jim Chapdelaine, composer; Jay Whitsett, executive producer and vice president of programming for CPTV; and Kevin Jeffko, CPTV editor, were nominated for the CPTV original documentary Teens Behind the Wheel.

  • In the Emmy category of Health or Science Program, Jay Whitsett, executive producer and vice president of programming for CPTV, and Jennifer Boyd, producer/director, were nominated for the CPTV series Women’s Health Update.

    In the Emmy category of Program-Single Spot, Paul Pfeffer, CPTV writer/producer, and Dave DiGiovanni, CPTV editor, were nominated for Spy.

  • In the Emmy category of Topical Documentary, Jay Whitsett, executive producer and vice president of programming for CPTV; Frank Borres, producer; and Kevin Jeffko, CPTV editor, were nominated for the CPTV original documentary The Challenge. Borres was also nominated for an Emmy in the Writer-Program category for The Challenge.

  • In the Documentary-Topical category, Roger Springfield, producer, was nominated for an Emmy for Top Dogs: The Run to Number One.
  • WNPR News won its fifth Mark Twain Award for Station Excellence from the Associated Press. The Mark Twain Award was presented on Sunday, April 30, 2006 at the Connecticut Associated Press Broadcasters Association’s annual dinner and awards ceremony.

  • Av Harris, WNPR’s Capitol reporter, was awarded first place in the Associated Press Enterprise Reporting category for his story on violence in Hartford’s North End.

  • Faith Middleton, host of WNPR’s The Faith Middleton Show, is the recipient of the Connecticut Bar Association’s 2006 Distinguished Public Service Award. The Faith Middleton Show is celebrating 25 years on the air this year. The Connecticut Bar Association’s 2006 Distinguished Public Service Award will be presented to Middleton at a ceremony on Monday, June 12, 2006 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. Past recipients of this award have included playwright Arthur Miller, author Wally Lamb, forensic scientist Dr. Henry Lee and jazz musician Benny Goodman.
