About the Director/Producer

Open Doors to Family Learning: Parents and Communities for Kids is Rick Sheiber’s premier half-hour documentary as both writer and producer. He set out to create a documentary that mirrors the inviting educational opportunities offered by the libraries, museums, and community centers affiliated with the PACK initiative. He has spent the last year visiting family-learning activities throughout Greater New Haven and interviewing representatives from the organizations and the parents and children that benefit from the experience.

Rick has been honing his production skills over the last 9 years working on numerous television productions for PBS, Connecticut Public Television and other clients. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree from Quinnipiac College in 1999, Rick worked as an Associate Producer with Ken Simon on Connecticut and the Sea (hosted by Walter Cronkite) and the Emmy Award winning The Mark of Uncas, which documents the life and legacy of the Mohegan’s first sachem Uncas.

From 2001 to 2003, Rick served as the Coordinating Producer for the health/fitness/ lifestyle series America’s Walking that aired on PBS stations across the country.

In 2005, Rick produced coverage of the New Haven Citizen Forum on education and the achievement gap for MacNeil/Lehrer Productions’ national PBS special By The People. He has also been selected to cover By the People’s Dialogues in Democracy: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness and how that relates to the issue of immigration in Connecticut.
