About Our Sponsors

CPTV is pleased to have Webster Bank and the Republican American as local sponsors of the preview screening and broadcast of The War. Both prestigious organizations are headquartered in Waterbury and have long-standing ties to its community.

Webster Bank

"Webster is pleased to partner with CPTV in presenting Ken Burns' highly anticipated documentary, 'TheWar'", states Webster Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James C. Smith. "As a company founded in Waterbury just a few short years before the eve of this enormous historical event, we are especially thrilled that Mr. Burns decided to highlight the Brass City as one of the American urban centers that worked and sacrificed to support the Allied effort. Waterbury is a city with a rich heritage of both manufacturing and patriotism, two elements that joined well and proudly during the war."

Republican-American

Republican-American is pleased to announce a partnership with CPTV and Webster Bank to help bring Ken Burns' production of "The War" to Connecticut.

The Burns documentary traces the lives of four American communities through Word War II. One of those cities is Waterbury, home of the Republican-American, which has been the leading daily newspaper throughout the Naugatuck Valley region for more than a century. (The other towns in the documentary are Mobile, Ala., Sacramento, Calif. and Luverne, Minn.)

"This is a natural partnership for us," said William J. Pape, president and publisher of the Republican-American. "We're deeply rooted in this community and region and through the pages of the morning Republican and afternoon American, we charted the course of World War II. Waterbury, home to the three largest brass manufacturing companies in the world at that time, was a production power house for everything from munitions to belt buckles. And the region certainly gave its share of young men to fight in Europe and the Pacific."

The newspaper holds veterans of all wars in special esteem, Pape said, noting that the newspaper specifically honored "The Greatest Generation" in 2004 and 2005 with a series called "Portraits of Honor." The series was built from first-person and family vignettes of their lives and service during World War II.

Jonathan Kellogg, the paper's executive editor, said the Republican-American looks forward to the Burns documentary airing this fall. It's a natural way for us to educate younger generations about the sacrifice and heroics of the region during the World War years, he said.

"We're honored to have a role as a sponsor and to provide continuing coverage in daily newspaper for this important documentary project," he said.
